Statement on Shooting and Violence in Khagrachari District, Chittagong Hill Tracts
Jumma Net expresses strong outrage and deep condolences regarding the alleged rape of a Marma woman by Bengali youths on September 23, 2025, in the vicinity of Guimara Upazila, Khagrachari District, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, and the subsequent shooting and violent response by security forces against indigenous protests on September 28. Reports indicate at least three indigenous individuals were killed and many others injured amid the protests.
(Reports vary on the number of casualties; some confirm four deaths.)
This incident occurred against the backdrop of protests and road blockades against the gang rape of a Marma girl by three Bengali youths. Reports indicate clashes between government security forces and protesters, gunfire, and the burning of markets and houses by Bengali residents.
Jumma Net denounces excessive use of force against peaceful protests, collective reprisals against residents, or intimidation of victims and witnesses, regardless of the reason. We strongly urge the government, security authorities, and relevant agencies to restore order swiftly and justly and to hold the perpetrators accountable through strict legal measures.
